Cafe Solstice
Nestled in the heart of Capitol Hill, 4116 University Way NE has been a cornerstone of neighborhood culture since its inception. Founded in 1993 by Joel Wood and joined shortly after by Doug Sowers, this establishment has been an integral part of Seattle's vibrant street life. Throughout the 1990s, the coffee cart stood as a symbol of independent enterprise, shaping the landscape of Broadway and the surrounding area. In 2001, a transition to a more expansive location at 42nd and University Way marked a new era for the establishment. With its welcoming ambiance, the venue became a favorite haunt for students seeking solace during rainy study sessions. After twelve successful years in the University District, a return to Capitol Hill was inevitable. A new chapter unfolded with the opening of a multifaceted space, situated just a block away from its original location. Spanning 3,500 square feet, plus a mezzanine, the venue offers a diverse range of offerings, from breakfast and lunch to dinner fare, complemented by an array of baked goods, coffee, and a selection of over a dozen beers on tap.

I happened upon this café by chance, and it was one that I have not regretted. Cafe Solstice had a quiet atmosphere that I enjoyed being present in. I sat at a table for awhile and finished some work, wrote some letters, and read from a book within the same morning visit. What was helpful was the communal dish return area and having a water refill station to use, I could practice autonomy and not have to ask for extra help when I could do these tasks for myself. The food was tasty, and a little expensive, I paid $23 for two sandwiches and a slice of banana bread after tax. I would probably come back again, in my experience, it can be difficult to find quiet spaces.

If you're a tea lover, you'll enjoy this Cafe with your coffee drinking friends as it has quite a few loose leaf tea options. On a gloomy morning, I usually go for the London Fog. Their London Fog is actually made nicely. They steep the tea long enough, so you can taste the aroma of the earl grey perfectly. It's also not too sweet. I usually don't like my London Fog overly vanilla or overly sweet. Their baked items are good but I prefer their savory options more often. I enjoy their southwest veggie burrito which is always nicely toasted and their cookies. My favorite is their ginger molasses which is both soft and crunchy. I do like the ambiance and the airiness of the place. You can easily social distance while working on your laptop. I do enjoy the music and the comfy seating as well. Bring your earbuds or headset, if you don't like to work with louder music in the background. The staff can come off a little cold from time to time but I don't let that overshadow the positives.

The atmosphere is welcoming and there’s ample seating, making it a perfect place for students to study. the coffee is smooth and not bitter, though are aren’t any ‘fun’ flavors

Great Cafe for both dine in or taking on your morning walk. I've enjoyed both the Chai latte and London fog here, and my coffee drinking partner likes the drip brew. Sandwiches are grilled right after ordering and the baked goods are delicious and filling. I love the ambiance and feel this would be a great place to bring visiting family and friends.

A cool place to chill and have a cup of coffee. Not sure why they served hot coffee in a glass though.

Good coffee, good prices, cool space to hang out and get some work done. Haven't tried the food but it looks and smells delicious. I got, on the baristas recommendation, an iced oatmilk latte with honey and cinnamon. Tastes like cinnamon toast crunch! A really nice little place that's leaps and bounds more pleasant and tasty than the incredibly busy (why?) Starbucks a block away. The place is pretty much always bustling but the service is super quick. Definitely my new spot to hang out in between classes. Probably isn't a great place to do your math homework as it's a bit loud.

Fun atmosphere that's comfortable. Nice cappuccino. Near the university and not far from UW medical center.
